8 Essential Websites for the Hanoi Newbie

Don’t know where the best street food is in Hanoi? Or don’t know what to do on the weekend? If you’ve lived in Hanoi for a while, you’ll probably be familiar with most of these, but if you’re a newbie, check out the links below for the most essential websites for Hanoi, Vietnam.

Street Food

Nonna Chong’s Street Food Map – A very detailed google map of Hanoi street food eateries.

Undiscovered Guide – This site also contains a good map of Hanoi street foods. In addition, it also contains descriptions, photos, and tips for ordering. Very useful!

Buying, Selling, and Jobs

Hanoi Massive – Love it or hate it, it’s undeniably helpful to join the closed Facebook group if you’re moving to Hanoi as it’s an easy way to find jobs, apartments, and just about anything else you might think of, if you can wade through all the nonsense using the search bar. There’s no link. You’ll have to search for the page on Facebook and join.

The New Hanoian – It’s a great place check out reviews of businesses, restaurants, and services. I personally find it more trustworthy than Tripadvisor as it’s mostly expats who post, so the reviewers are more likely to only post about the places they really love, as opposed to visitors who might just post because it’s the only place they ate in Hanoi. It’s also an excellent place to find jobs if you’re determined to do so before you arrive.

Things to Do

Vietnam Guide – It’s a great site to go to if you’re looking to enjoy some of the more touristic aspects of Hanoi, such as spas, nightclubs, and cultural sites. Whether you’re just passing through Hanoi or have been here for a while and need to see the city with fresh eyes, this can be a good site to check out.

Hanoi Grapevine – It’s a calendar of events for Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. It’s a good site to check out if you’re interested in doing something a bit out of the ordinary with your weekend.

The Word – This site is also a print magazine which can be found at many expat hotspots throughout Hanoi. The “What’s On” section is useful, as are the articles for finding out about what’s going on in Hanoi and Vietnam.

List of English-Speaking Hospitals – This is the U.S. embassy’s web page and it lists all the English hospitals in Hanoi. It’s super useful if you get sick and don’t have a translator to bring with you.

  1. Thanks for the shout-out! The street food guide was a massive labour of love for us (we lived in Hanoi for a year and munched our way around the Old Quarter during that time), glad that you found it useful.
